Potential anti-haematotoxic and antioxidant effects of Pterostilbene against Fluoride: A biochemical, and histomorphogical changes in the erythrocytes of rats

Abstract

Objective: The present study has been designed to investigate the toxicity of Fluoride (NaF) on hematological parameters and conceivable approaches to restrain its toxic impact using a blueberry stilbeniod, pterostilbene (PTSB) in rats. Material and Methods: Male Wistar rats (150-180 grams) were divided into four groups of six rats in each. Group I received normal saline only, Group II was orally administered with NaF (25 mg/kg) and Group III received PTSB (40 mg/kg) and NaF (25 mg/kg), while Group IV was administered with PTSB (40 mg/kg) alone. Results: Our results showed that NaF exposed group exhibited a significant (P<0.05) decrease in all the haematological variables when compared to control group. The oxidative stress markers in the RBC were elevated significantly (P<0.05) along with the marked decrease in antioxidants and membrane bound ATPases in the NaF treated rats when compared to control rats. NaF administration also caused phenomenal histomorphological alterations in RBC with reference to control. PSTB supplementation significantly revert back all the altered biochemical and histomorphological consequences in rats when compared to NaF treated rats. Conclusion: The overall findings demonstrated the reversal of haematotoxic effects induced by NaF upon PSTB supplementation in rats and the therapeutic efficacy was worthy and significant. Hence PSTB could serve as a better antioxidant in the management of fluorosis and its allied complications.
